Certain Medications Used For Diabetes Treatment Have Low Heart Failure Risks.

Two drugs given to individuals with diabetes type II were found to have lower risk of heart problems in newly started individuals without heart problems and individuals with heart problems. These medications; saxagliptin and sitagliptin when compared to other medications used in the treatment of diabetes as stated in an FDA study published in the Anals of Internal Medicine.

Saxagliptin had previously been associated with increased with increased risk of heart disease. This result was analyzed among nearly 79,000 new saxagliptin users and 300,000 sitagliptin users with heart failure hospitalization rates compared to those individuals starting pioglitazone, sulfonylureas and long-acting insulin. These individuals were followed up and after 7-9 months followup, sitagliptin and saxagliptin showed not to have higher heart failure hospitalization rates as compared to individuals on other anti-diabetic medications. The rates were lower in individuals on Saxagliptin and sitaglipin.
