ESOPHAGEAL CANCER


OVERVIEW

The esophagus is a long hollow time that runs from the throat to the junction of the stomach. It helps propel food when eaten to the stomach for digestion. Cancer begins with a change in the cells lining the esophagus, involving any part of the esophagus. Most commonly involved part worldwide is the upper esophagus. Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and squamous cell cancer of the esophagus not account for 95% of esophageal cancers. Worldwide, squamous cell cancer of the esophagus is the predominant cancer type, but in the western countries adenocarcinoma is more predominant.
