The former Atomic Kitten singer was spotted raising a glass to her old pal after a sombre service last week, after promising she would "say goodbye in style".
But she later hit back at reports suggesting she was "slurring her words" and "downing drinks".
A source told new! magazine: "She said it was 'what David would've wanted' and said she doesn't think she's done anything wrong.
"Kerry's genuinely heartbroken at David's death and can't see why people are slagging her off for having a drink. She was partying with Kym Marsh, her daughter Emilie, and the Coronation Street lot all night.
"She insists it was a celebration and it was right to get hammered."
Kerry, 35, was pictured drinking and chatting with fellow mourners at The Old Bull & Bush pub in Hampstead in London following the service.
Hitting back at reports suggesting she had too much to drink, she later wrote on Twitter: "David got the most amazing send off! And no there was no rowing no one being too drunk when pics are taken they can be so misguided! Xx"
The source added: "She is under a lot of pressure with David dying, and generally stressed as a single mum of five. She just wishes people would give her a break."
Kerry and David met after he starred on I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2006.
Mum-of-five Kerry won the show just two years earlier, so they already had plenty in common.
In 2009, Kerry appeared on his show My Life! A Musical Concert, before David returned the favour with an appearance in her reality show My Fair Kerry.
